UK chip giant ARM is developing a graphics processing unit (GPU) in Israel, aiming to compete with Nvidia and Intel. ARM's development center in Ra'anana is estimated to employ around 100 chip and software engineers in its global graphics processing group. Reports suggest that ARM is focusing on graphics processing for the video game market, and if ARM fully enters this field, the technology could also be applied to AI processing, similar to Nvidia's approach.
Currently, ARM's global graphics processing team primarily works on game market graphics processing, but they may eventually venture into AI chips. Unlike other chip companies, ARM doesn't develop or manufacture its processors; instead, it creates intellectual property (IP) or chip development software, which it then sells to chip companies. The global graphics processing team is divided into hardware and software groups. The hardware team focuses on developing GPUs, including the Immortalis GPU, while the software team develops interfaces for external graphics engine developers, supporting both major companies and startups in using Vulkan and OpenGL for game development.
